A Ghastly Tale From Kerala: A Pregnant Elephant Dies A Cruel Death

Pregnancy is dear to all Moms—be it humans, birds or animals, as it’s the process of giving birth to your offspring, and you don’t get that chance often in your life. It’s terrifying to even imagine a pregnant animal passing away, as it’s not one but two lives involved. But to our utter dismay, recently, an expecting elephant died in ‘God’s own country’ Kerala. A chill ran down my spine when I heard the horrific tale of events that led to the untimely death of this giant mammal.

Kerala, with its picturesque locals, is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in India. From its backwaters to bushy coffee gardens to cosy houseboats, it has a plethora of things to offer. When I visited the place with my family, I was taken aback by its natural beauty and wildlife; the icing on the cake being the Elephant rides, which are adventurous and thrilling to the core.

These big animals make every possible effort to make your ride memorable. Like an obedient student, they follow the Mahout, thereby ensuring the comfort and safety of the temporary riders. But today, there’s a threat looming over this species, which is no doubt a matter of grave concern.

It’s so inhumane to feed fruit filled with explosives to these innocent animals. It seems it’s a technique used by the local farmers to protect their crops from wild boars. If that’s the case, then how come this elephant fell prey to this ghastly act?

Her mouth was ripped, and her face was burning owing to the bursting of cracker in her mouth. It was so severe that she had to keep her mouth and face immersed in water for a long period of time before she finally breathed her last. As per reports, she could have been wandering for 20 days before walking into the Velliyar river in Palakkad district to seek relief. No sooner we had come out of this case that one more case of elephant death has surfaced from the same state.

Whether intentional or unintentional, these acts are ruthless, and the system needs to uncover the truth at the earliest. We have no right to play with the lives of these naïve creatures. That justifies as to why these animals and birds were roaming freely without any fear when we, humans, were confined to our homes during the pandemic.
